I bought a 1999 Jimny yesterday and had a 130mile journey home, it ran perfectly well for about 15 miles and then started to judder/mis fire. I persevered for about a mile and the problem cleared. I then drove around 100 miles on the A1 at 60-65mph and all was well. After turning off the A1 and onto A/B roads the problem returned but a little more severe. It was about 9pm at this point and so I decided to coax it home and research the problem.
There were no warning lights and when left to tick over it still ran but was lumpy with a fut,-fut exhaust note rather than the more regular beat.
I have read that the cam position sensor may be failing or an intermittent fault with a coil pack but I was wondering if this could be a fuel supply problem. If anyone has any ideas I would be grateful. I hope the weather is reasonable at the weekend so that I can have a proper look at it.

You could pull the plug leads and coil packs one at a time and highlight if it runs worse to isolate which it is if any - stop car between so you don't get a shock.
I had a spark plug push itself out of the head the other night (am guessing it had been cross threaded by a previous owner) which also destroyed the plug and the underside of the coil pack. Ran rough with an occasional engine check light for the mile I had to drive it to get to where I could strip it. Now waiting for the engine guy to come and re-thread and helicoil / thread cert the hole for me then we can drop in new plugs, coil pack and so on.
Seems to be more common than I thought when I searched the forum.
Good luck in diagnosing and fixing.
