When you took the gear lever out, likely the small plastic bush fell off the bottom, or you could have lost the metal bush from inside one of the rubbers in the remote linkage.

If you are on your own, start by taking the lever out again and looking for a plastic bush that fill the space between the ring on the linkage and the ball end of the stick.
If you have a mate, get them to wiggle the stick whilst you look at the linkages from underneath for any lost motion.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
