Not sure on VVT but my non vvt has a knock sensor in the centre of the block behind the inlet manifold.....single wire from it....it should auto retard if knock is encountered.....Put a timing light on it and see what the timing is maybe.
My test for knock sensors is hold engine at 2500 and using a steel bar and hammer to hit the sensor boss(part of the engine block) and see what the timing does.....old school/skool
I'd say check your fuel too as it could be too lean......not many have the facility for that though.
