Batteries & Alternators was created by newham
Soon I will be fitting a winch ( not that i intend getting stuck that often ) to my jimny. I have been researching apropriate battery and alternator combinations that would be better suited than the standard jimny setup. The battery seems straight forward but i am totally baffled with which alternator to use.
Just to clarify i do not understand electronics so if anyone starts talking about running twin batteries with some kind of switching device, i will be even more confused.
Please help.

Twin batteries and a split charger is the right way to do it mate ,
Uping the alternator alone wont do much and neither will fitting a bit bigger battery

if you put twin batteries in a common choice seems to be numax cvx 1000 amp or Odyssey pc1500 depending on you budget. Split charge systems seem very popular but if you have enough reserve in you battery why worry. If you don't intend on winching that much then there is no need to have a split charge system just have a pair of large batteries (numax) in parallel and while your not winching your alternator will charge both batteries evenly.
by wiring you 2 batteries in parallel + to + and - to - it acts as one large battery whereas if you wire your batteries in series + to - then it will become 24 v not what you want.
i hope im not being to patronizing.

Yes you could,
a pair of numax batteries are 172ah and 1000cca deep cycle finding a 12v lorry battery (most lorries are 24v) for the same price and spec would be very difficult id imagine. I plan on running my winches on 24v and everything else on 12v as per the above diagram
