most just cover the glass with sticky back plastic stuff

or you could take the glass out use it as a templete to cut a steel or ally plate to replace the glass

Ive been looking into this myself as ive often a few grands worth of bike in the back of mine. The easiest/cheapest and simplest way ive found is just vinyl on the outside of the glass. Asked at a local vinyl specialist and they can even colour match the vinyl for a price. Advantage of vinyl is its easy to remove should you wish too.
