You can get them with holes in for digging in mud and clay, I suppose the hole breaks the suction you get in this type of material. I guess it makes sense if you dig in a lot of mud.
Here is another full of holes for those that want to see more.

We have alot of avalanches around where i live, and thanks to the great hobby of randonee where people on skis seek out steep snow covered hills and mountains to climb up and alpine ski down, the Red Cross where I am member gets to dig out these guys.
I can surely say this is the ultimate race to get to the avalanche and dig them out fast as 90% of people that gets in an avalanche is dead within an hour. And of course weight is a big issue for carrying a shovel to the mountain.
There is no shovels with holes here.

Apparently it is a mud shovel

www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/comment...n_it_for_offroading/
I am not sure Michael Palin's Eric Olthwaite (Ripping Yarns TV 1970s) would have thought much of it, 'A Spear & Jackson No. 3' it isn't.

For completeness (a sort of 'Show us your Shovel'), here is my Jimny shovel

All metal design, folding, small and light, locks in place, lives under the drivers seat and most likely useless.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this cutout shovel would work as well as a normal spade/shovel. But it would still work most of the time. And be better than nothing.
Not often you really need to dig in something as fluid as soup.

Well who'd have thought it, I'll try and eat my soup with a fork next time
