Call me old school but I use an OS map. When I get to the route I read the signs (if there are any) and if there is anything to suggest I can't go down it I don't. Be polite to the people you meet, stick to the track (I hate it when you see ruts along the side of tracks where people have messed around trying to get stuck) and you shouldn't have a problem.
