I recently starting using os mapping.
I found a few local by ways to try out, however they were blocked by locked gates and other farm machinery.
Is this normal?
you may see byways on OS maps, but you must confirm the legality of driving them with the 'Definitive Map' held by the councils Rights of Way office. Easy these days to get a section 59 notice for driving in the wrong place or on a closed byway.
Join a club, probably Glass, and go out with them on trips.
Finally remember that a green lane be it a byway or a UCR or a 'Other Road or Track with Public Access' is in the public domain and generally on someones land, its not a Pay and Play day, shouldnt be turned into a rutted mess or a mudbath, hopefully once you have driven it there should be no sign you have ever been there, leave it for others to enjoy, and also nothing for the landowner to complain about.
The map lives at the council, you can arrange to go and view it with a ROW officer.
Sorry if I went on a bit, get far too many idiots on the lane's having 'fun' and i try to educate where I can to stop the damage happening and the lanes closing....

Couldn't agree more, should see the mess on strata Florida where idiots go off piste, to name just one.
