Here is mine. Those cracks on the underside of the belt look like they shouldn't be there...?

As you face the windscreen the belt on the right is the one with cracks in and is visibly older. The one on the left has no cracks on the underside and is newer black looking. I assume the one with cracks on the right side is the power steering belt? Since the belts look quite different age wise I assume the drive belt has been changed at some point. Because the belts cost £30 each I am thinking just replace the worn looking one, or should I switch both at the same time?

Belt on left side of engine when looking at the windscreen attached the alternator (drive belt?):

Worn and slightly cracked belt on right side of engine (power steering belt?):

These in the store are over £30 each though:

Are cheaper ones reliable?

Also if someone could advise if I should only replaced that cracked belt OR BOTH despite the other one not being cracked that would be useful.

Hmm would this do?

I think if I was doing a trip of that size I would:

Replace all wheel bearings
Replace Kingpin Bearings
Replace all bushes and bolts
Replace all brake pads and shoes and front discs if not newish
Replace both aux belts and if a single cam the cam belt
Change the coolant
Bleed the brakes / change the brake fluid
Replace tyres if not enough tread to do what is required or getting old

Obviously I wouldn't do any of these that had not long been done.

Things I would carry:

The old Aux belts
Brake Fluid
Water for coolant until you can buy some coolant
One man brake bleeding kit
All the tools you could possibly need including front wheel bearing tool
Lightweight aluminium trolley jack or a bottle jack if space is an issue
One axle stand
Spare CV's on shafts greased up ready to go if you intend on doing any proper off-roading and have bigger tyres
Waterproof bearing grease (can be used for all purposes including CV's)
Tarpaulin to lay on when working on the car
Many latex gloves to keep your hands clean when working on the car
Spare fuses - including the bigger capacity ones under the bonnet
Code reader and list of codes
Cam sensor if fitted
Crank Sensor if fitted
Brake cleaner
WD40
Baby wipes
Big roll of tissue (blue roll)
Power Steering Fluid
EP90 transmission fluid - will work in everything even if not ideal for the gearbox
Transfer box mounts and nuts
Electric Impact Gun and method of charging (invertor)
Breaker bar
First Aid Kit
Fire Extinguisher
Anything else required to drive abroad - spare bulbs, warning triangle, GB badge etc
Recovery telephone numbers
Telephone numbers for your bank
Fit a safe in your car hidden for passports etc

I'm sure I could think if more.

Thanks for the list Kirkynut. I am carrying most of the items you listed except for some of the heavier tools for intensive roadside jobs.

As for the things you would change, I will change the kingpins, coolant and the belts. Just the bearings I am not messing with. Brake shoes still have half their wear left in them (I did clean them all up though), discs work fine and 1500 miles more ought be fine (it's only ten return trips to London :P). Fluids are all fine as the PO really looked after car and did oil and filter and spark plug change in August. Tyres all have plenty of tread on them are in solid condition with no cracking.

I'm not able to afford much more than that right now.

One thing I'd like to ask you about directly - the BELTS! Am I right in understanding that the belt attached to the alternator is the DRIVE belt and the other one is the POWER STEERING belt? The pics I posted of both in the previous post are their condition. What is your opinion on just changing the belt that is visibly cracked and old? And where can I get cheap but good belts online, I don't fancy paying £30 each if I don't have to! Cheers

They're the alternator belt and power steering pump to me!

I meant power steering pump belt or power steering belt, not the actual pump.

I wouldn't get hung up on their names. Just go to a motor factor and tell them what the belt goes round and they'll give you the right one.
