Advice wanted please.

I have hopefully posted pictures of the front axle ball joints. I know there is grease there, but am unsure as to what they should look like.

There isn't any movement in the kingpins that I can find. I've tugged both wheels by holding on to the top of the tyre and can find no movement or noise what so ever. (Car has done 28K)

Do these look normal? Compared to the picture Daniel30 posted I think they are, but I'm often wrong :)

Many thanks

Paul

I'd wipe them down to get rid of the build up and see what happens to them over a few days or so. A leaking oil seal will allow oil to show at the dust seal sooner or later.

Do it right - use Hammerite

Yeah give them a clean up and keep an eye on them they both look the same I don't know how common it is for both of them to go exactly the same time if they are going :)

Check the diff oil level by removing the filler and seeing if anything pours out. If nothing does then fill it up till it does. Then clean it up and see if it leaks.

My fear being it might have been leaking but has run dry of anything to leak.

When I bought the car last December, I changed the oil in both axles. The front was slightly low on oil when I drained it :( Although I must admit, I haven't checked it since.

Not knowing a thing about these joints at the time, I wiped the dirty grease off. I then thought that they would go rusty and re-greased the surface of the ball joints. They haven't been touched for 9 months and this is what they look like now. If the king pins need doing, Ill happily change them and the oil seals.

So... Are the photo's of the joints are normal?? If not, What should they look like??

It is to my understanding that the ball joints should be dry and no grease, oil, etc on them.
Wipe them clean, make sure your oil is topped up. If oil appears again then the problem will most likely be the seal.

Now I get it, they are supposed to be dry :pinch:

I honestly thought they were supposed to be greased or lubed, but not with oil dripping out

I've got another job to do :)

They have cv joints inside that are lubricated with normal cv grease and there's an oil seal within that stops axle oil coming out onto the cv's and out of the dust seal that covers the swivel ball.

I gained the impression oil has leaked from the way the stain has spread around but it could be the grease that's done this if thin enough I suppose.

In which case maybe clean it up with a de greasing chemical like Gunk and check the oil level again and keep an eye on it. If it is then clear it's leaking, give it new kingpin bearings and oil seals. Obviously re grease the cv's too.

Thanks for the help. I have a much better understanding now.

I will clean them up and have a look at what's happening after a couple of weeks. It won't be done for a week or so as the wife and I are off to Cornwall (Polperro) Saturday for 4 days of overeating and drinking :woohoo:

We will be taking her car!

Useful info for a Jimny novice. I looked at two cars recently and were so bad oil was up the inside of the tyres! The quest continues at the weekend.

I wouldn't let worn kingpins put you off buying a jimny. It's a cheap fix, massive amounts of rust or mechanical noises would put me of but not kingpins as they are definitely a service item

Gold Jimny the best colour (sold) :(

Big red Jimny 32" tyres, arbs, cage 5:1 transfer etc. (Sold)

Grey pick up Jimny
Turbo m13a, arbs, floating rear shafts, disc conversion rear, vented front conversion. 245 70 16. Winch, 3" lift, 4:16 trans hd shafts and CVS

Looks to me like the swivels have been overpacked with grease, and the surplus is getting out.

As there is no paint on yours, keep the grease there to stop them going rusty.

I painted mine when I did the kingpins, they were as rusty as old iron and took a fair bit of emery cloth to clean them up.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
