Speedo not working was created by ripandcap
Hi all i just bought, taxed, mot'd and insured my jimny and the speedo have stopped working. The rev needle is still working and everything else, i have checked the rev sensor connections, all the fuses i could find, checked all the wiring behind the clocks and changed the clocks and still not working. I also disconnected the batter for a few minutes and a couple of hours.
Any one have any suggestions?

Thanks for reply, would the rev counter be working if it is the speedo pick up? Do i need to take the transfer box off to check that?

the rev counter would still work if the speedo isnt its to different systems i think the speedo pick up is the bottom plug on the transfer box and there is no need to remove the box to change it also what year and engine do you have

Hi Mark thank you for the info. I have an x reg 2000 jimny. Thats the plug and wires i checked which seem to be sitting in and the wires seem ok. Do it just pull out or will i need tools? How do i check to see if its working?

tools i think and you may be able to test it with a good multi meter or if you have an oscilloscope even better

Thanks again Mark. Do you know where i will get one from or is it a main dealer part? Do the transfer box have to come off to remove the sensor?

to remove the speed sensor it's just one small bolt and pull but don't forget to drain the oil in the transfer first or you will have oil everywhere

no i didnt remove the box i just felt for looseness etc and checked the wires for splits/breaks. I changed the clutch a few months ago but the speedo has been working since then and it has only just stopped working now. i will slip underneath again tomorrow and have another look see if i can remove the sensor.

My speedo stops working every now and then. I find that it is usually a loose connection under the fuses that are next to the battery so I just jiggle everything and then it normally comes good. If it doesn't immediately come good then it still fixes itself some days or weeks later.
In the meantime, for the G13BB engine, the following rev/kph figures are pretty accurate...
Non-lugging revs
5th gear 3000 revs 80 kph Most roads, arterials
5th gear 4000 revs 100 kph Freeway cruising
4th gear 2250 revs 50 kph Built-up areas
3rd gear 2500 revs 40kph School areas
Hope this helps, it does for me
