Pre 2005 or post 2005? was created by Lazia23
Afternoon gents,
Just a quick question: I'm thinking of buying a second hand jimny, is it worth stretching my budget to accommodate the pre 2005 refresh? Is the new interior worth the extra dosh? I'm not after a hardcore offroader just a capable 4x4 for the occasional greenlane and mini expedition with other friends who have 4x4s.
Cheers,
Will

Hi, i changed from a 2003 model to a 2008 model and could not believe the difference. The interior is much nicer and i find the later vvt engine has more power and is better on petrol. Trouble is after spending more to get a later model i cannot afford to mod it......yet !! B) B)

Cheers Wombat, yeah that's my problem, buy one for 1600 for a 2002 and stick a light bar and tires on it or 2500 for a 2005 stock and wait for my tires to go bald.

I'd personally go on mileage/condition when making a decision. Mine is an 05 reg pre vvt. I found many VVTs are vastly overpriced- also worth considering the gearbox/transfer box on the earlier models seem to be more reliable and also cheaper to fix should they go wrong. A pre VVT gearbox can be found for sub £100 whereas VVT ones go for hundreds.
What's the mileage of the two? Happy you know where to look for rust?

I've got one of each, a 2004 non-VVT (40k mls), and a 2006 VVT (57k mls)
The newer VVT is considerably better on fuel, is infinitely more stylish in appearance both inside and out, and just looks better altogether.
However, and this is purely personal, I prefer the earlier model, the engine is superb despite the drop in mpg, AND, I prefer the floor_shift 4WD (old school driver, old school sytems...works best for me

I'm planning to live forever.....so far, so good !!

mileage is between 50,000 and 67,000 i don't have one in mind in particular and am going to look for a few tomorrow. Rust wise i'm after a hard top so wheel arches, door pillars and along the chassis? correct me if i'm wrong. :)

Behind headlights and boot also. Good luck in your search and remember go with your gut feeling I had to walk away from 3 before I found mine.

Door pillars and chassis are fine, but sills, behind the headlight and the boot floor are prime candidates for rust.

It is not so much behind the headlamps as under the front wheel arch plastic cover which covers the rear box section of the front body cross-member. By the time the headlamps show distress normally means this cross-member is well rotted. Also you really need the headlamps removed to fully inspect the damage behind them.

So I went for a 2001 JLX with 40,000 on the clock. Completely untouched, rust free and with alloys. It was a steal for 2000. Thanks for the advice gents. :)
