i'd say do the transfer case first then see how you feel, it makes such a huge difference you may not feel the need for the engine conversion?

You cant put a vvti engine into your non vvti car. Its a disaster believe me I learned from bitter 1st hand experience at the hands of some right monkeys

pm me if you need more details.

More power would always be nice on the road, and different transfer ratios are never going to change that.

I've been thinking an early MX5 engine might be a good swap. They are the same RWD layout, fairly light-weight and with lots of aftermarket solutions for engine management.

Keeping with the Suzuki engine, they seem to have a lot in common with the bigger engines in the Swift and Liana. One australian member on here has fitted a 1.8 from a Liana, although I don't think that engine was available in the UK. The bore is the same on the 1.3 as on some of the 1.6s, so it may be that you could swap the crank and rods but keep everything else stock. That sounds far too simple to work, though.

A few people have done diesel conversions. I can't see the diesel route making much sense for road use. The slower revving engine won't work with the Jimny gearing, and too much torque is just gonna end up breaking things. An equivalent diesel engine will also be more complicated and heavier.

I swapped out my m13a (2000 my non vvt) and fitted a m16a out of a knackered liana i bought,i did a 200 mile round trip sunday gone with 80 miles of that greenlanes and some very challenging ones at that, the 1.6 doesnt have to be revved as hard and the gear box up and down as much.its a simple swap no harness swap etc bolts upto the original gearbox just a fee basic parts need swapping over.well worth doing imo.
