Disappointing. Thought I'd check the Little Beast (recently purchased) for diff & gear box oil levels. Couldn't get the level plugs out. Looks like a special tool is required?

Diff fillers can be a bugger - I put a large set of mole grips round the outside done up tight and knock it round. Then do them up with a 3/4" ratchet.

Gearbox & transfer box filer and drains just need a 3/4" ratchet as do diff drains. They usually come undone without rounding at all but can be stiff. Just make sure you press the ratchet into the hole with your other hand.

Diff fillers just round with a 3/4" ratchet when trying to undo.

Don't overtighten any of them and get a new copper washer for the diff fillers preventing theneed to tighten too much.

I bought a tool for them recently to fit snigly in them but it was no better than a ratchet in all honesty.

Thanks folks. I'll get myself a 3/8 reducer to stick on my 1/2. Ooooh.

I have to admit to being amused by the state of the exhaust system. I have NEVER seen an exhaust so completely rotten throughout and yet no holes. Not a single blow from anywhere. However, the cat heat shield is rattling like a good 'un and driving the CO crazy (she was already over halfway there). Kwik-Fit quoted 495 to change the whole system. Ouch. :S

My 54 plate has the same rusty exhaust (no holes yet) and cat rattle. I had better start saving

Hi Motty,

I've decided that the CO can put up with it until the weather improves. At least the new exhaust won't have to immediately suffer road grit and salt.

Check the small heat shield slightly further along the exhaust pipe. These are fastened on with clips similar to jubilee clips at the factory... And rust through and allow the shield to vibrate badly.

I replaced mine with stainless jubilees and have no rattles at all now

Regarding getting the plugs out use a bit if heat from a blow lamp. It comes out easy peaty then . Don't forget to take filler plug out first, cos it is no good draining down only to find you can't get filler plug out!!!

Thanks to all for their feedback re both the filler plugs and exhaust.

Re the plugs, I'll get a 1/2 to 3/8 reducer (and spare gaskets ready for when I put them back).

Re the exhaust, it is definitely the heat shield. Held together with nuts and bolts. They've stretched and I can rattle the shield by hand. May just sort that for now and fit a complete exhaust replacement when the weather improves.
