Annoying noise....stumped!!! was created by Jimnyadmirer
Hi all,
Well, less than a week into owning my used Jimny, I'm getting this really annoying noise...
It sounds a bit like a metal on metal / grinding / whirring / rotating noise coming from the under side of the car..
It starts at around 30mph (ish) and continues all theway up and down the speedo until I'm almost stopped... Around 10-15mph. It's even still there when clutch is disengaged and its outif gear...
So far ice had all the wheels off.... Scraped all the rust of the backplates and disc edges.... Had the rear drums off and cleaned out all the rust in there too (did find the drivers side rear drum back plate rusted through and thought that might be the cause..... But noise is still there!)
Could it be anything to do with prop shafts etc?
Have had a look on the forums relating to this but so far could only find info on the disc backplates.... Has anyone encountered this problem and rectified it??
Your help is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks
Ian.

Hi markyp,
I've checked the heat shield to see if its loose and it seems pretty solid!!
I'm just beginning to wonder if its a dry bearing or a bearing on the way out?
It's really hard to pinpoint the source!! Driving me round the bend!!

Are your uni joints greasable? Or have you tried spraying into the CV joint on tailshaft?

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

You could take a risk and jack up both rear wheels, putting the axle on secure axle stands, then drive the car to 40 mph and see if it still makes the noise, then you will know it is in the driveline or rear axle.
(Be careful that it doesn't come off the stands, or a wheel touch the floor, be ready to brake quickly)
Then you could take the bigger risk of getting someone else to "drive" whilst you go around listening for the noise.
(I wouldn't advise getting underneath though)

I'm thinking that might have to be the way forward at the moment... Can't see any other way round it... Dot really want to take it to a garage yet, especially at this time of year etc... Could end up costing a fortune!!

I'm not 100% sure zookfastback, I'm new to the world of jimnys and a very amateur mechanic... Electrician to trade so I'd be alright if I had a problem with the electrics!!! Ha.

Sent you a pm. If you did replace the backplate you would have to do the rear wheel bearings too.

J999pre, sent you a PM back.
I had it in 4 wheel drive for awhile today and didn't get up any great speed to try it out to Be honest! Haven't had much of a chance to look into it again today at all.
I did notice however that even at a speed lower than 30mph web I hit a bump in the road it would rear its head for a short while!?
Think it's time to take the wheels off again...
Bought myself a pair of axle stands today... Need to beat this niggle!!!

Right, got the car up on the jack and stands this morning and have found a little something which may point towards the noise??
Found this... Think the seal has gone and it could be running dry of grease? Dirt trapped inside?
Just working out on the street today and its freezing, so might have to wait till next week once I clear some of the rubbish out of my garage!!
