Hello ladies and gents!

Iv got a quick question. Has anyone had problems applying a vinyl front number plate?
I fitted one a while back and it creased and it took 2 hours to remove and left some nice scratches!
I have now just bought a new one to have an other attempt.

should a dampen it or the bonet first or do I just have to be super careful?

Iv blacked my windows out and applied graphics before but never had this problem!!

ps I know I dont need a vinyl one but personally I like the look!

Use some soapy water on surface which allows it to slide to position it correctly then leave it to dry.....be sure to get all air bubbles out.

I do this with all decals

Most of our stuff we apply dry - needs 2 sets of hands though, -keep it all under slight tension and press down firmly as you go, from centre outwards.
To remove warm gently with a hair dryer and it should peel away perfectly. :D

Hi mate,
Iv done my own tints and decals on my cars in the past and also put my vinyl number plate on the bonnet. Use some soapy water and then if its not quite straight you can move it about untill you are happy then either just leave it to dry or use a bank card or squegey to push the water out and it will stick straight away.
Put the vinyl plate on the flat of the bonnet not on the rounded part as it will crease.

Thanks
James

Once again the old question arrises, is this legal as my next door neighbour plod says it's not as the law requires it to be fitted to " A Vertical Surface" !!!

It also, by law, has to have the maker of the plates' post code (at least) printed on it.

I have a stick on plate on the edge of the bonnet, and a normal plate i have to screw back on the bumper for the MOT every year. Saves buying a new plate every couple of months though. Never been pulled on the road but then again jimny only does 3000 laning miles a year. I have been 'pulled' by 'Operation Blackbrook' laning in the Peaks and nobody questioned the plate. Frustrates me that i have to fit the old one for MOT , as mentioned above has to have postcode of manufacturer on it and a BS mark I think.

Thanks all for your comments. all fitted and looks great. Im willing to take the risk. good idea about keeping the original in the boot though!! I was stuck in traffic the other day with one police car in front and one behind and nothing was said. The garrage i go to said it would be fine for the MOT but we will see, not until next Jan so hey ho! :)

I have a plate with a pair of magnets on the back that will stick somewhere suitable for MOT time and a less legal one for the rest of the time.

I figure that it's better to have a plate that is nudging illegal than no plate at all - particularly if you have a legal one on board. Explaining why you have a stick on plate is usually sufficient if it does get questioned. The layout of the vinyl one plus font, colour etc are spot on legal - so it makes it clear that it's vinyl so as not to get broken off road rather than to look 'flash'.
