Mine has been running with a generic 4 wire (I think) sensor off eBay for years and passes MOT emissions every time.

Obviously, if the air cleaner is full of mud, the oil is like treacle and the plugs are 200,000 miles old it would be sensible to service it, but if it is in reasonable condition a £20 punt on a pre-cat sensor (on the exhaust manifold) is a good bet rather than a couple of hours messing with stuff and not finding anything.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Some cars are pretty sensitive and like genuine sensors (like Toyotas, Subarus and older Mitsys) but I think you should be ok on your Jimny. Since thinking about what you said, my Jimny only just passed its emission test at its recent MOT. If you can get a cheapy sensor and it works I might stick one on mine just to make sure!
