I think they are activated by impact sensors and you have to have a really hard whack to set them off!
We came over this with a bit of speed and stopped with a bit of a jolt, so much so I was worried about bending the winch bumper!
The air bags did not go off, thankfully, and there was no damage to anything on the car! We got winched out backwards and the world was a happy place once again!

Under the gear lever trim you have the airbag controller; the sensor is mounted on the body, under the cup holders trim (a small box branded "Mitsubishi").
