I suppose that I first fell in love with the wee Suzuki many years ago when I was the proud owner of a SJ413 long wheelbase pickup, so much fun, just kept on going, until there were so many bodged repairs that it was sold (for almost the same as I paid) for spares or repair!
So when I was in the market for a small 4x4, Jimny was my first and only choice. Well that is to say, after a SJ, only they appear to be like hen's teeth....
Now for North of the border read North East Scotland and anyone who has tried to buy a car up here more than 10 years old will tell you they are generally full of rust (salty roads for up to 5 months of the year takes its toll) so having looked around locally (150 mile radius) and finding the brown scourge everywhere I cast my net further....
I'd made my mind up on a 2005 or later VVT manual without AC but with decent alloy's, it had to be low mileage, full service history and as clean as possible.
Eventually I found what I was looking for 2005 VVT one owner full service history, had spent it's time in middle England, 49k on the clock, had never failed an MOT and looked clean - it was a distance away so I got a mate to give the dealer a visit. Once that was done and the above confirmed I got to the long distance phone deal - new tyres, new discs and pads, new service and MOT agreed along with a 3 month nationwide warranty and a deposit changed hands....
Ten days later I made a torturous (2 very delayed flights) journey south with a change of clothes, sleeping bag, bivi, tarp, tiny meths stove and mug/pot all of which weighed less than 6kg and could be carried as hand luggage...
I picked the Jimny up that evening, the dealer having arranged a lift from the airport to his garage for me. I then spent a couple of days locally with it in case I had any problems before the 600 mile drive home....
One day before the great English summer bank holiday weekend is not the best time to attempt to drive almost the length of Britain, and woe, yes it did get the better of me - nine hours and I still had almost 300 miles to go - so the one day journey took two - the second day swapping almost stationery traffic for torrential rain - but hey, I did it and so did the Jimny!!!
So am I pleased with my purchase? Yes I am.
Am I glad I went all that way? Yes I am..
Because every time I get in that little car I can't help but smile to myself....
And isn't that why so many of us love our Jimmy's - they have character.
Just like their owners...

Hopefully I'm going to get time to do some serious rust proofing on her before the cold weather sets in..
