4 x 4 system. was created by Molecatcher1957
Sorry guys I started a thread last week regarding my 4 wheel drive system not working and the advice given was to fit manual hubs. This remains an option but I have been like a dog with a bone with this one and have now isolated the problem to the front hubs. I have fitted a replacement solenoid and piping which now gives me a vacuum right up to the point of entry to the hub itself. This isolates the problem to one of the locking collars not pulling on (or does it ?). Does anyone know how the system works in the hub and how technical is it. I have searched the archives and technical info section for info without gain. I seem to be pretty close to solving the problem but any further advice would be appreciated. Many thanks molecatcher

Hi Molecatcher1957,

I'm not expert on repairing the 4x4 system, so far my push button 4x4 has worked but I suspect as the pipes corrode further I will one day have issues. I would look to replace the rusty vaccum pipes with something like silicon tubing.

Below is a very informative article from Bigjimny member Bosanek which may help you:

All the best.

Jim

It's either some extra friction in the hubs that the vacuum isn't strong enough to overcome or you have a leak because the hub assembly isn't sealed- sometimes due to a worn wheel bearing.

The hubs are very easy to remove and inspect. Just undo the ring of 6 bolts. They have a strange torx head but an 8 or 10mm socket fits them nicely. A clean and degrease followed by a light application of some of grease should sort them out.

Thanks for that, is it simply a sliding collar that goes over the splines on the driveshaft or are there other components that can be at fault. I have never taken them apart but it sounds reasonably straight forward. Many thanks molecatcher

Almost. There's a second intermediate ring between the halfshaft collar and outer. Very simple. As Busta says don't go mad with the grease on reassembling.
