Hi Rob, welcome to the club. Don't know a lot about the auto jimnys but I had a similar problem with my Shogun. Drained the old fluid out, flushed it and cleaned the filter. With new good quality fluid the problem was gone. Maybe just fluke but it worked for me. I think the main culprit was the filter as it was bad but the fluid was very dark as well. Good luck and hope you solve it. :)

Have you tried new transmission fluid or just put the old stuff back in?

I'm guessing that if you can strip and rebuild an auto transmission you know what burnt fluid looks like but thought I'd best ask!

Yeah put new fluid in the old stuff didn't look to bad it's the first box I've done wondering if it could be a electrical fault ?

I think it must be electrical as you've asked covered everything else!

I wouldn't know where to start on an auto!

I had a vibration on my Beemer's auto box and changed the oil and it was fixed. That oil was burnt and black though.

Sounds like it.....
You need to get your hands on the suzuki service manual and wiring diagrams.
First place to start would be the trouble shooting guide as not selecting 4th could be a failsafe mode for a certain fault (maybe a gear selector/lever issue)
If you've not got a multi meter get one.
I'd move on to basic voltage/continuity/resistance checks.
Last resort would be to get a spare tcm to swap in.
A few ideas to start.
Gear lever position, could be a mechanical adjustment issue or the position sensor itself.
Any exposed earth points for corrosion.
All connectors for corrosion, bent pins etc.
Rpm sensors, the jimny trans is a modern design and will have 2 maybe 3 rpm sensors for measuring torque converter and clutch pack slippage.

Good luck.

When you say you put new fluid in, did you pump the old fluid out? The "drain" doesn't drain so something like 2 thirds of the old fluid is still in there.

Check the transmission temp sensor, since the Jimny does not change into 4th until the sensor reads above about 30 degrees Celsius. So may be your sensor is sending wrong reading to the TCM. It also does not go into 4th if Coolant temp is below 50.

Forgive me if I state something that might be overly obvious (simple) but that's the place I like to start.

The auto transmission on the Jimny has 2 positions for drive. When the shift lever is to the left, it will shift from 1st to 4th. If you move the shift lever slightly to the right, it will only shift from 1st to 3rd.

Anticipating that this isn't the problem, I would lean toward the comments by Kirkynut and OllieNZ

I started out with nothing & still have most of it left

In the states when the transmission is serviced the fluid is pumped thru the transmission; since draining the cooler, hoses and pan will not drain the fluid in the torque converter. The only way to replace the fluid remaining in the torque converter would be to pump the fluid thru the transmission OR drain the cooler, hoses and pan, refill and cycle the transmission then drain and refill the pan again. The drain and fill does not guarantee a complete fluid replacement.
