Another Vacuum question. was created by SteveJimny
Hello, I'm sorry to bring up another vacuum system related question.
Like many, my Jimny is suffering from a not engaging 4WD system. When I bought it last week the 4WD-light was on when I put it in 4H or 4L but since I fiddled with some things it flashes after about 15 seconds. This is what I've done.
- Checked for vacuum right after the check valve (OK)
- Check for vacuum right after VSV1 and VSV2 (OK/OK)
- Checked for lock vacuum and unlock vacuum after last metal tubing on the axle left and right (OK/OK)
- Tested both lock and unlock functions with mouth on last rubber tubes left and right (Left required more vacuum to lock than right but both locked)
So I am kind of down to two last things I think.
Either the vacuum is not strong enough to lock (unlock seems to work) or the hubs need cleaning/rebuilding (magnets both work). I really don't feel like taking the hubs apart but in the same time I'd love to have the automatic hubs working instead of spending money on manuals.
Could it be the hubs internals, vacuum not strong enough or something else?
Thanks.

Take a look in the Wiki at common problems.....my first port of call is to apply compressed air (10 PSI) to each rubber pipe from the solenoids....you can run the system on pressure permanent I suppose it's just opposite to vacuum.
If all works then I clean the solenoids....left side is a longer pipe so it's to be expected it's slower.....if it doesn't then it's a seal either worn or damaged or a broken steel pipe.....the solenoids can be a bugger to clean out....carb cleaner and 100PSI whilst actuating them off the vehicle is my method.
I'm going to miss the click, click when I do away with part time 4x4.

Could be the wheelbearing on the left side, if the bearing is gone there is no seal for the vacuum system.
If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there
