Main beam spot lights was created by Russ6334
Hello
I'm new to the forum after buying a W plate jimny for some off road fun in the south Devon area.
I've bought a led strip light and wired it up but I'm having loads of trouble, I've also found old threads where people have had the same and rectified it with advice but I can't make head nor tails out of the advice.
Basically using the relay I have:
30 fused to battery
87 to led +
85 to - batt
86 from main beam
Now when I turn my lights on the led works on main beam, when I turn the lights off the led comes back on.
Because it's permanent live, now if I put it to dipped beam when I turn my lights off the led is off! But with lights on I blind people but on main beam again off.
I've played around with the headlamp main dipped and earth (though it's not earth as no continuity to earth) and nothing will turn the spot light off with what lights unless I have it on dipped which is no good.
Neither do I want to fit a switch because again you either forget or you blind people and you have either dead batt or an RTA!
Help!
Where do i put 86??????
Don't take this as an offence but please don't direct me to other threads because equally I can't make sense of them!
Thanks
Russ

So with a permanent live set-up the main beam switch provides the GROUND (Battery minus)
So you need
1. 30 Fused to battery
2. 87 to LED Bar +
3. 85 to Battery Postive via fuse (just connect it to 30)
4. 86 to main beam wire.
5. LED bar - to GROUND

I have one on mine and its great. The only downside is when you get used to the amount of light it makes
your dipped beam look crap.

Hi Martin
Well it worked for a day but for some reason when I turn the lights off now the spot light is on but low power. Also with the lights on it is also on with main and dipped but not sure how as when the light is off it has no power?
Not sure if it's relevant but I fitted LED headlamp bulbs today (and to be honest they beat the spotlights in any case) but since doing so this problem has arrived, also worth noting the "waterproof" spotlight was "Ford" tested yesterday and now has condensation!
Any ideas?

As far as I am aware there is no approval for led replacement luminares in a reflector originally designed for incandescent ones. As in for led headlights the whole lamp assembly has to have been designed as an led unit to be legal. Unless it has changed in the last 6 months.

I'm not worried about the headlamps, I'll swap them for the MoT of needs be but want the spot light to work.

LED bulbs have completely different electrical characteristics to filament bulbs and can completely upset some circuitry. Now the Jimny has very simple circuits but is earth switched.
However it still sounds as if you have got the wiring wrong somewhere. The relay you have should be ON or OFF and hence the light bar should be ON or OFF. For the LED light bar to be half on (DIM) there must be some leak to earth on the switched side of the relay which should not be possible

It confuses me as well!
It worked fine the way you said until I put the led headlamps in

I tried using LED headlight H4 type bulbs but on my car they kept blinkning slightly when switched off. even with the ignition switched off. Also the geometry is way off so low beam was all over the place. These where cheap ebay ones. When the bulbs have a different inner electrical resistance than the halogen you can get all sorts of strange electrical faults. The wiring, relays and switches are not designed for this. Creepy crawly currents and very low voltage leaks into the bulbs i guess.
More expencive and hopefully better quality items may work better and may produce less errors.
I swithced to good Osram H4 bulbs with whiter light and is a great improvement on older H4 bulbs.
