My bad, i was getting confused with the remote part of it!

It lookz vaguely after market to me. If pressing it activates the 4ways what does press and hold do, i suspect fjre the alarm as a personal defence type thing?

Re-reading the thread, you mean the round thing.

I have a round thing there with LED too, it is the aftermarket alarm system.
Mine had a cap that I lost and under there are some contacts to press an emergency key onto.
The LED flashes when the alarm is set.
If it is a press switch, pressing it just before you activate the alarm disables the ultrasonic sensors as mentioned above.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

As above - It looks like an aftermarket immobiliser to me, if it is then it's obviously not working lol, but you normally press and key fob against it to start the engine.

That's all I can think of.
