The other day, I'd dropped the transfer box back out and shortened and bent the transfer box lever so that it would engage low and stay in place... it had been jumping out because of the elasticity of the boot and the closeness of the stick to the hole in the transmission tunnel...
So, today -
Up on axle stands, wheels off, drain the diff... wind the drums off...
Prop bolts out, diff bolts out, new drain plug fitted...
Shafts out enough to get the diff out -
And then get it on the bench -
And compare the tooth count for the blogs... so mark one tooth and then count around the crown wheel...
43, as expected... i.e. 43 on the crown wheel, 10 on the pinion, so 43 / 10 = 4.3 later diff
And then compare that to the replacement from James J999PRE -
NOOoooo.... Wrong diff?!
So I texted James and went indoors to check the forum, and have a google...
And then it hit me... back out to the garage...
And on the whiteboard... LOL 11 teeth on the pinion, that would do it?
Indeed, 11 teeth on the 'new' (Old, pre VVT diff), so 43 / 11 = 3.909 diff
Phew!

Cleaned the diff and axle casing faces, and then smeared gasket paste on and bolted the replacement diff in... then the shafts went back in, and the hubs rebuilt, wheels back on, oil in the axle, and then a test drive...
70mph on the GPS is 65mph on the speedo and 4200rpm, I can live with that
60mph on the speedo at 4000rpm, is
65mph on the GPS...
So, the gearing is now better, but the speedo is a little bit out... it was right with the ofiginal 4.3 diffs in though.
The gearing is still short, you soon change up from first, etc, a bit like driving a rally car! But acceleration is great!
The low side of the box seems really low too, so that's an added benefit!
Just got to do the front diff to match now then, and put the front prop back in too (I wasn't driving it in low with different diffs in

Cleaned the drive, tidied the garage (ZookBOB factory! ) and reversed the beige Jimny in, so I can do it in the comfort of the garage, warm and dry, flat concrete floor, and the radio on...
So I'll get on with the front axle this coming week...
And then back onto the blue one to get it ready for a 'laning trip on the 4th of June

Yes, jumped in and went for a test drive only to find the fuel light come on 5 miles from home, and wallet on my desk as I had my scruffs on! Made it back though, picked up wallet and went to fill it up

Thanks James! Will get the front diff changed on Wednesday now it's sat in the garage and get the others diffs off to you!
(James kindly did them on an exchange basis... and I've taken a few weeks to get round to swapping them )

Could Redacted do something about the speedo ring to correct that?

Hmmm, not so easy on a normal Jimny transfer box... That's the speedo ring gear on the top shaft in the photo, so it means splitting the box to get to it -

Hey! That's a good idea!! I'll have a look at that!
Thanks Riccy!

All the bolts were mega-rusty, seized, some rounded...
... but, eventually. got the front diff out and the new (old) one in... and the two VVT diffs left by carrier to go back to James J999PRE as exchanges for the pre-VVT ones now fitted...
Cleaned everything up -
Just need to rub my balls with some emery paper!
And then rebuild everything on Sunday... I was just going to put everything back how it was, but it was such a pig of a job, I've ordered new kingpin bearings and axle oil seals, to go with the ball seals I had in stock, some thin shims on the kingpins, some new grease in the CVs / knuckles, and new bolts everywhere... so at least I know it's good for another 20,000 miles or so... especially as this one won't be venturing offroad...?
My two handy tools for the job -
On the left half of a pair of plumbers over-centre pliers which are perfect for levering out oil seals, and on the right my kingpin bearing removal tool... it's a suitably sized socket on a small extension bar, the perfect size for tapping out the bearings from the axle's knuckle

New kingpin bearings, copper shims, new bolts, new oil seal, new ball seal, new bolts, new caliper bolts...
Just having a bacon butty for brunch and then back to the garage to tackle the other side...
