Wine improves with age.
The older I get the more I like it

Just doing some on line browsing for GL5 80 90 oil and its even more confusing when looking for a bargain so many options of synthetic, part synthetic, semi synthetic, hypoid, non hypoid etc etc.
Then look up the differences and find loads of conflicting opinions on the uses and downfalls.
Do you buy on price ? quality? brand name ? lucky dip ?

2,500 miles is very excessive. The service schedule says replace the gearbox oil and inspect (although you might as well replace..) the transfer and diff oils every 3 years/ 27,000 miles for normal use, or 2 years/18,000 miles if used off-road, for short trips in extreme cold or for regular towing. Unless you have extended breathers you should check the oils for contamination after deep water crossings.
Use GL5 hypoid in the diffs and GL4 in the gearbox and transfer case. All viscountcies between 75 and 90 are fine for the UK climate. There is no requirement for semi synthetic or synthetic oil.

On my 2006 Jimny which I have only just bought, I was concerned about the oils being changed. So I rang the main dealer who serviced it last if they had all been done. I was told that only the engine oil had been done (51000 miles service) and the differentials/transmission did not need changing until 90k miles.
After reading people opinions on here about oil changes I decided to change mine, plus it gives me a good indication as to the condition of the parts by looking at the drained oils condition.
Front dif. Oil was golden in colour, magnetic drain plug had some sludge but not a lot.
Transfer Box darker in colour (it is a different grade, so it could be that), consistency was thin, drain plug had some deposits on it.
Rear Dif. Oil was dark brown, drain plug had actual flakes of metal stuck to it, you could also see very fine grains of bronze in the oil, drain plug had thick sludge.
I have yet to do the gearbox, as I could do with lifting the car to so I can reach up to the drain/filler plugs.
The car is much quieter now. I'm concerned about the rear axle, so I will do another oil change after a few hundred miles just to get the metallic fragments out of it. I appreciate that in normal use the Jimny runs in rear wheel drive so there is more wear on the parts, but to have left the oil unchanged until 90K would have worm away the gears diff.
So do change your oil, despite what a dealer may say.

Totally agree, change mine every 2 years regardless of mileage for piece of mind.
