Hi Guys

I finally got round to ordering the new sensor, and I wanted to check I was changing the right one when I get it, so I took a couple of pics hoping some will confirm if I've got it right

First one is of what believe is the crank sensor behind the alternator

Second one is a wider shot with that cavity being in the lower left

If anyone can confirm I've got it right, or set me straight, I'd appreciate it

Cheers

Paul

Ok so I got it out but putting the new one in I snapped the bolt. Is it now a case of drilling it out and then re-tapping it for a new, slightly larger, bolt ?

I.e take it to someone who knows what they're doing before I do any more damage

Or is there an easier way ?

You could try a left handed drill bit....or standard easy outs.....I thought the site had only one resident Gorilla? :D

Take care though as if you're not au fait with this line of work you could make things worse.

Thanks Keithy

I really was going easy on it, there was still a little play in the sensor so I figured it had a smudge left to go, and then it went. To be fair though it's only a tiny thin little bolt.

My dad, who is more au fair than I with this kind of thing, said they are two options but that I should leave both alone until a pro has had a go.

I guess we'll see who I can find and what they can do. fingers crossed it's not the end of the Jimny story for me

Very careful accurate drilling is the key. The first small drill (2mm) needs to be dead centre and then work up to the dia of the bolt or just under. If you have a tap of the bolts size (dia and thread) you can then run that through and all will be ok. I would not use an "easy out" as they are brittle and if they snap then you are really in the pooie stuff!

In a pinch I'd just turn the sensor slightly and use a self tapper to hold the sensor in.....I don't do negative thinking.....bring me a pack of carling and I'll drill and helicoil it :D

Hi Mick, thank you for the tips, and I am tempted to try, even found a 2mm left handed drill bit for 4 quid on Amazon. However the key word in your sentence is 'careful' and as we've gathered, that's not my speciality

Keithy, I really like they self tapper idea, I assume you mean a small self tapping screw being driven in between the snapped bolt and the hole ?

I realise the sensor is also plugging a hole in the engine, do you know if it would have much pressure against it or is this literally just to stop it falling out when you go over a bump ?

Cheers

I doubt it goes all the way through....pressure should be just crankcase pressure...only off idle.

That's what I was rhinking re the self tapper!
