3rd/4th gear noise? was created by Riccy
Having recently spent a small fortune sorting out the kingpins/wheel bearings and adding in a 2" lift and soundproofing, the little jimny has started on a new problem...

when in 3rd or 4th gear it makes a sort of rattly bearing whine under acceleration or engine braking. Its totally silent in 5th and its hard to hear much in 1st or 2nd. If i dip the clutch when its making the noise it stops.
I cant really tell what its doing if i put it in 4x4 high as dont have anywhere to get up to speed off road, and in 4x4 low it always makes a horrible noise anyway.

Its done about 40k miles from new and is an 07 plate. The clutch isnt great and i was wondering if it could be the release bearing making the noise?

Any thought would be appreciated,

Thanks
Ric

Most likely it is a bearing in the gearbox. The VVTs are well known for it.
You can buy the "rebuild kit" with all the bearings for about £120, or strip it down and just source the noisy one.

You would pay about the same for a second hand gearbox, and that will likely whine too.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationTry nearer £700 for a s/hand R72 box. The breakers are well aware the box is in demand.

However having said this there is one for sale that is extremely cheap but it's for spares/repair with bearing problems!!

OK, thanks for the info. will see about blagging a mate to rebuild it, is beyond my abilities i think.

will it just collapse one day and then game over if i keep driving it? dont want to crash or damage other parts if thats a risk?

Yes, has happened to several members, including Martin.

Might trash the gears, might not.

Best to get it done rather than worry about it.

It seems I have the same problem!-(
Did you get it sorted?
How long did you drive it for and did it collapse?
What was the cost?

I avoided it for a little while by shortshifting from 2nd to 5th as the Jimny is quite tractable.
However I would recommend getting it sorted sooner rather than later as you may trash Suzuki only parts in the gearbox and that will cost a lot more.
If the bearings actually go you will probably damage the shafts as well.
I believe Suzuki were quoting(some time ago) £2500 for a recon box.
I had mine done locally for app £650 inc a new clutch kit.
That was also for removing the gearbox so if you can do that yourself you'll save a lot on the labour cost.
I believe Martin in the Jimny shop can supply a similar rebuild kit?

Thanks, the missus uses it for work so I hope it can manage till Friday and then she has half term due to working in a school. I will get it booked in somewhere then...
May be able to have it off myself, read the cross member can be an issue tho.
Anyone got experience removing the 2005+ boxes?

I believe it can be done by easing the box back and removing the clutch which will allow the box to drop down.
I think Martin ratchetted his engine forward a bit as well?
I think it'll be ok just driving locally just don't thrash it down a motorway lol

Yes - I removed the rad and ratcheted the engine forward on my standard M13.

On my sons VVT we had a gearbox company do the work. They had a fixed labour charge of £300 for a gearbox strip and rebuild (including removal from car). I understand "I got my moneys worth!" based on the removing of the box from the car :)

That's cheap! I had a quote from a local garage at £1580 Inc vat!!! Since then I had 4 quotes all around the 1000£ mark Inc clutch and 12mnth warranty.
It's at the gearbox centre in sheerness as we speak, box is already out. They just called me saying the clutch looks brand-new but has crumbled around the edges, they suspect it's had a 'cheap' clutch pretty recently. We've only had it for 6months and 6000 miles.
I will report back when it's all done, the got it today and expect it ready for collection Friday!
