Front of the engine is the cam sensor (reads the cam shafts position)
Similarly the one near the alty is the crank sensor (reads crank position)

ok thanks. it so annoying, i went out monday on a laning trip it played up on the way to the meeting point after about 15-20 minutes on the dual carriageway so i limped it there then applied water to the crank sensor to the amusement of 5 defender owners, restarted it fine and spent the day green laning with no further issues. its such a random problem!

Ordered the crankshaft sensor, has anyone done a definitive guide to replacing it?

Job done piece of cake really, undo both bolts on the alternator where the adjustment bar is then push it towards the engine to get the belt off then pull it all the way down away from the engine. undo the bolt holding the sensor in, wiggle it out unplug it plug in new sensor reverse steps to re assemble. took about 20 minutes if that and im no mechanic!

only time will tell if its sorted now.

That's good to hear. I like it when I solve a problem on my cars, makes me feel much better when it's fixed.

It can get really frustrating when you can't work it out.

Hi, looking to do this next week as mine is playing up with exact same symptoms.

Quick questions - where did you get your crankshaft sensor, what was the OEM part no (I've looked it up as 33220-76G11) and how much was it?

Thanks in advance,

Hi, I know this is an old topic but I found it to be very helpful for my needs. I already ordered a new crankshaft sensor for my 2002 M13A Jimny because i accidentally damaged it with a wrench when I tried to move the alternator (I wanted to tighten the belt). The engine takes forever to start now and when it does, the rev goes down and it almost dies and the orange engine light is ON.
I would like to ask you something, please. If I replace the sensor, will the orange engine light comes back to normal (off) or is it necessary to be reset using an OBD2 device? I am not a mechanic and maybe this is a silly question but I like to be sure that my Jimny will be fine.
If you have any advice, it would be more than welcome.
Sorry for my English and thanks a lot!

Cristian.

The new crankshaft sensor shouldn't cause that kind of problem and doesn't require resetting the ECU. If the sensor was faulty I'd have thought the engine would not run at all. That said, it could still be a faulty part. Assuming the engine ran fine before you damaged the crank sensor I'd seek another sensor and see if it fixes it.

Otherwise it sounds like a fuel/air issue. Clean the idle control valve, crankcase pressure valve (on top, beside the rocker cover), check the air filter. Low on fuel?

Today I replaced the crank sensor. The orange engine light is off now,it takes 1 second to start after ignition, the idle is smooth, everything seems to be fine. Thank you for this topic, it helped me a lot.

mine was working fine, until i drove at a constant speed over 40 mph then it started playing up..
5 mins stopped then i could drive again..
discovered that if i used backroads so constantly accelerating and slowing down then it was fine all day long, but do a constant speed and the engine would falter !
I bought £19 one and its fine...made in italy !
