Hi guys . I drived my Jimny today for the first time off road . I ENGAGED 4wd low before I went up hill . The light stays on NOT flashing but at some point I noticed on the mud that front wheels are not turning . It's a 2003 Jimny . Could be the cv joints completely gone from previous owner? I heard 2 3 times some knoking on the right front wheel . THANKS a million

Just to eliminate the obvious...is it possible you have manual hubs?

This sounds yet again like another example of the system not working true. Last owner of mine only realised this when she came to use 4x4 in the snow and then it was too late. Mostly we all change to manual hubs.

Engage 4x4 and switch off the car. Raise both front wheels and support the axle on stands. Rotate one wheel, the other should rotate in the opposite direction. If not listen for and feel for any clunky noises throughout the full arc of the steering on both wheels. Now raise and support the rear axle too. From under the car turn the front propshaft by hand and observe the front wheels they should both move together. If not then from the side rotate each front wheel one at a time whilst restraint is applied to the other by either a wedge or an assistant, observe the front propshaft it should rotate with the turning wheel. If it does not then that hub has a fault.

Even in 4x4 it can still send all the torque to just one wheel on each axle. Could it be that the wheel you were looking at wasn't spinning but the other side was? In which case, everything is working as normal. If you heard clicking then the hubs are working properly so there is no need to switch to manual hubs.

And yes, it could be a broken CV.

Thanks a million. Seems like 4wd hub works . I had a broken cv joint on driver side . I will fix it tomorrow.

Funny thing is that when 4x4 system fails, everyone fit manual hubs.....

Pro's and con's, both manual and automatic, can generate a long debate, but a sanity check of the entire system (from time to time) can spare a lot of nerves....

It does frustrate me when so many say fit manual hubs without considering the vacuum system may not even be at fault. I think the vacuum system is more reliable than it's given credit for, but people are often too quick to discard it rather than look for and fix simple problems.

That is an interesting comment. I guess in my case it was a question of certainty/reliability for the future, needing to get it working at the time and a long look at the existing clapped out system. Having had manual hubs on my SJ and LJ I quickly reached the conclusion that I did.
