 Turns out the compressor was fine... it's the second winch / accessory battery that's furbar'ed!

An Odyssey PC1200 too! :'(

Sooo, today we went to play with the big boys... we went to an AWDC trial at Buildwas, Telford, Shropshire...

I'd rung the Clerk of Course the week before and explained that although I'd been offroading for 25 years on Pay'n'Play and our Greenlaning trips, but I'd never really competed... And I didn't want to turn up as a novice and get lumped into the modified class. But they said to come along and they'd put us last in each section, and change the gates around if necessary...

So, 'we' - Alan and I - travelled down on the Sunday morning and got there for scrutineering at 9am ready for a 10am start...

Errr.. Alan?... everyone else seems to be driving 'buggies' -

Oh sh!t look at this one!

There were 8 of these offroad beasts, and us, in a road going Jimny!! They explained that they don't really get many road-legal cars these days, it's just trailered buggy builds!

But, they'd let us go last on every section, see what everyone else does, and they'd move the gates a little for us on each of the 8 sections... Gulp!

Time to sign in then...

We were allocated ATV2 Class, a road going vehicle with non-standard modifications, i.e. the rear ARB air-Locker, the front LSD and crawler box, we got above the lower road going classes though as we had an (ORA) internal roll hoop...

So, good introductory chat, briefing and scrutineering over, we were ready to go!

On to section 1 then, and we watched everyone else have a go...

Failed the section... at this point I started getting nervous!

More photo of the others...

And then the Proto class buggy... Awesome, four wheel steer, Unimog axles...

First casualty of the day, blown shaft on section one...

Back on the trailer, day over...

Gulp! So then it was our turn last over the first section... The Clerk of Course, Dave Riley :) , did indeed move some of the flags for us...

I should explain, it was based on Eurotrial rules, so 8 sections, 5 gates on each, the left and right flags on the canes showing each gate - "WHITE TO THE RIGHT" everyone told us (repeatedly!)...

So we had our first go and made it round in one piece with 5 reverses, 1 gate hit, and one failed bank climb, so not to bad to start with...

I took quite a few photos of the other sections, but only of the other competitors, we were too busy driving and navigating to take any of ourselves!

Four sections in the morning and we stopped for lunch, under the trees for some shade as it was scorching hot in the sun...

After lunch we reconvened...

Another two casualties in the afternoon, another blown shaft, and a gearbox gone too, so another couple of buggies back on the trailers...

But the Jimny carried on ;)

Section 6 we got our first clear round! B)

Lined up for the last section of the day...

And the results! 58 being a damn respectful score apparently! We won our class, basically as we were the only one in it! ;)

BUT, we held our own, we had some gate changes, some downs rather than ups in the wooded sections, but everyone agreed we'd done really well for a "road going Jimny" !!!

The other scores -

Proto
James in the 4 wheel steer Buggy 11

Class 1
Ian 1
Perry 4
Dan 26
Jon 86
Drew 252

Class 2/AVT/B
Dave J (ME!) 58
Glyn 369

No bad for the first go then?! ;)

It was a good crack, we were made very welcome by everyone, there was a bit of standing around watching everyone else do the sections before it got to or turn, but it was better than just spectating, knowing it would be your go eventually...

Alan was worried about the abuse the Jimny was taking, 3 of the buggies (Jon, Drew, Glyn in the scoring above) had retired through damage, but we made it through to the end, and then drove it home, when all the rest went back on their trailers...

So, I'm happy with that... a result! ;)

When's the next one then? :woohoo:

Well done Dave. Very good result. Personally, trials are my favourite discipline. Its as much as a test of the driver as the machine. :) Anyone can throw a fortune at a 4x4 and winch them selves up to a punch but driving on a trial course is a completely different matter. Some of the Pro trucks are fantastic 4x4's but I bet they don't have as much fun as us.
Here are some of the boys in my club that I compete against (and beat sometimes)

I must say, a comment like that: "Anyone can throw a fortune at a 4x4 and winch them selves up..." offends me a bit.
I'm probably one of those guys spending a fair amount of money on my Jimny so that I can compete in challenge and trophy racing.

some like trials, some like challenge/trophy and others like something else. I myself find trails just plain boring. But that doesn't mean I do not understand how much effort is put into this sport and what it requires from both man and machine.

And same goes for winch challenge and trophy. I can tell you one thing, winching isn't just winching. It takes a lot of time to learn what techniques work and how to get the best out of the winch. And also get the teamwork going with you codriver.

Good, I'm glad about that.
As your continual comment about looking good outside a pub offends me and a lot of other users. So suck it up Tom.

It's been fettled just a tad.

Thanks Rich, nicely put! That's why I have always liked Vitaras and now Jimnys, we all build them and then use them for different things, as we are all "individuals" as you say...

Dog transporting, hunting, play days, greenlaning, competitions... or even just looking good on the road!

Play nicely everyone!

Dave
