Hi All,  going to attempt to replace fuel pump.  Is it easier to nibble out a section on the floor to remove and refit the fuel pump?  Or does it have to be done by lowering the fuel tank out of the vehicle.  Was thinking of nibbling a section out and later fabricating a sheet metal hinged and sealed flap door.

Or would it be easier to do the workshop manual way? Is there other considerations Im missing,  fuel lines?  Has anybody replaced the fuel pump from the top?    Advice always appreciated  Owl.

It can be done from above but it's not straightforward. Having said that it's not necessarily that simple to get the retaining bolts out of the tank to drop it. I think I would persist with taking the tank out though.

Lambert thanks, Is it just the cutting that puts you off the idea?  The rear seats are long gone,  just has a bit of carpet in the back

What puts me off is that a simple hole to get to the pump doesn't leave much space for the associated pipes and before you know it the whole boot floor is out.

Yes thanks Lambert, I thought of the pipes that they might need a bit of space and movement for disconnect and connection of pipes or more. Could get messy, Ill stick with your advice and drop the tank and work it to the w'shop manual details. Ill see how it goes. Thanks . Owl.

Just read the fuel pump guide,  with regards to fuel pump installation,  a new gasket required plus they say a new cover plate.  Is it a must do,  to replace that cover?  I havent removed it as yet,   assuming its thin steel plate moulded cover?  Ive done a couple of other makes of cars and recognise there was a metal plate cover but it wasnt necessary to replace those?

Just wondering what others have done in this situation,  replace fuel pump cover or reuse the existing one?  Because the access is pathetic, probably a bit of insurance to replace the cover as well!?  Owl

I would advise leave the filler/breather hoses in place and remove tank end
If you try to remove the 10mm head bolts from behind the filler flap
these will snap off
