Thanks Lambert for that.
I’ve been underneath and checked the transfer box (again) for a wiring fault and it all seems in order. There is a 4x4 controller in the dash which could be at fault. Has anyone any experience of changing/fault finding with these??

And I found this on the web which may be of use to the forum which goes into the Transfer Box in some detail.

It would appear my 2011 4x4 controller, is an up grade version form earlier models and is located under the driver side dash behind the fuse box and is part No 38885-61L10. Plenty of breakers have the earlier model unit with a different part number and it would appear different electrical connection blocks.
So if you know someone braking a 2010 onwards then let me know please.

Bit of an up date. the 4x4 controller in my 2011 jimny has the ability to fault find the system which is why it has an upgraded control box and as per the link I posted,

Fixed.
The problem of selecting 4WD on its own stopped, then I could put it in 4WD and not get it out without turning the ignition off and restarting. At my wits end I took it to a 4WD specialist near Tadcaster who diagnosed the problem as a gunked up actuator motor/contacts on the transfer box. £55.... bargain.
