Perhaps it's just the picture but the steel in yours looks much thicker than mine, that's what made me think it had been repaired.
In fact mine is thin enough to be bent inwards making the space small, if I had a arb I would have to bend it out to fit.

This is mine with the drop link. The axle is of indeterminate age and origin but from an automatic. Your drop link looks much bigger than mine.

It must have gone in at the factory!
Actually looking at the lock nut the amount of thread sticking above the nut on mine is similar to the the amount of thread on yours, BUT only after you have chopped yours down, suggesting it was too long?
Still does not explain how it was assembled.
Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

Thank you for your enthusiastic photos Gents, looks like I've accidently started a competition!
Scimike, well spotted! The back is slightly domed which makes it even more impossible to get out.

Fitted using Clarkson method methinks (hammer)
The metal it goes into can be bent back and forth a little to allow some space.
Or maybe it was installed in bits, or at a specific rotation angle thats been lost with age or filled with grease
Glad its sorted out though
