Not sure what this is?

Hi all,

In the middle of a small job and ended up removing the following item:

File Attachment:

I'm not completely sure what it is... I did a search on the part number which seemed to indicate '4x4 canister' which has me thinking it is something to do with the vacuum system (but I could be completely wrong).

This made me wonder, can I remove it all together seeing as I have manual hubs now? If so - does anyone have any advice on what to do with the two pipes going into it?

File Attachment:

Thanks in advance & sorry for the simple question. Kind of prefer to hear it from someone on here for confirmation...

Looks like an old fuel/oil filter to me pal? I could be mistaken though of course

Yes it is the vacuum can. Unnecessary if you have manual hubs.

It looks more like a fuel vapour filter/charcoal cannister to me, from an earlier Jimny with single cam engine?

Doesn't look like anything to do with the vac system, the small vac tank that lives behind the wing only has one pipe to it.

Actually that is a very good point where did you find that item, if it was in the engine bay its NOT the vacuum canister. Sorry to mislead you.

I must have spent too much time in the sun yesterday. Sorry.

This is a vacuum reservoir (image stolen from the internet)

Its an evap canister for the fuel breather. It has vac lines because the ECU 'purges' the canister when the engine starts briefly.

I would expect ECU issues if its removed (its gone on mine, but mine is running aftermarket ECU, intake, etc).

Yes, I have one of these n my early (X-reg) Jimny based buggy build too -

Here it is dangling as all the outer and inner wings have been removed, so I need to make a mount for it that will stand on top of the spring cup on the chassis...

Mine too has two small rubber hoses that run into the fuel intake area...

And I'm in the middle of adding a hose and breather tube to the port in the bottom of this "charcoal canister" as it vents to the atmosphere?

All sorted and it's back in now - I think I might consider trying to find a new one as this one seems a bit battered by corrosion.

File Attachment:

@X8GGY - I noticed that too. I spent a little bit of time trying to figure out if there was a pipe somewhere which had possibly fallen off but it does appear to just be left with nothing attached.

Martin found this from the FSM (Factory Service Manual) of how Suzuki Dealers should test the charcoal filter canister -

Indicating the bottom 'port' is vented to the atmosphere... and could possibly fill with water if the vehicle was submerged for a long period of time, hence why I thought I'd add it to my breather setup...
