Brake fluid change. was created by BGBrit
Hi all, Below is a reply from a fluid supplier. My Jimny 1,3 specs states only dot 3 brake fluid to be used in replacing the old brake fluid. But the guy below says differently. What's your thoughts can I use dot 4 which is easy for me to get whereas dot 3 is more difficult in Bulgaria. And always there is residue of old dot 3 in the system after a flush therefore is mixing the two a bad thing to do?

Cheers Tony.

Thank you for your enquiry
Looking at the data we have your vehicle a Dot 4 is suitable as is a Dot 3. The Dot 4 is higher specification which can be used were a Dot 3 is listed, the Dot 4 offers better performance than a Dot 3.
Best regards
Michael

I'm using dot 5.1 with no ill effects and prior to that was dot4.

Lambert... That sounds interesting as 5.1 I believe is long life leading to less changes over time. Did you flush the whole system first as I believe dot 4 and 5.1 don't mix. I usually bleed and top up as I go, less chance of air traps that way.

No it's dot 5 that is the none compatible silicon based version. Dot 5.1 is a higher boiling point mineral oil but is also more hydroscopic than the others. I have it so i can get more heat into my brakes without as many instances of fade which is useful for towing trailers in the hills where I farm.

Thanks Lambert... Since I don't tow I think I'll use the dot 4 as you recommend.
