4wd hi/lo flashing quickly CLUNCKS! was created by troggy
Daughters jim had a few odd noises, then hi/lo lights flashing quick. Lots of cluncks and grinding. Rescued the girl and nursed home with a lot of freewheeling and gentle persuasion. Up steep hill rocking side to side was ok as if locked in 4low, but on straight ran best in fifth.
I already put manual hubs on and checked the so it,s not hubs locking.
obviously a transmission prob, any ideas folks?

further to this, on dragging it home over single track back lanes to avoid traffic and you know what, shallow hills were a grind and cluncks as if tran wind up. backed up to unwind but awefully unkind drive home! stressful but got home.

pressing 4wd/ low had zero effect, both 4wd AND 4low flashing.

Is it a push button 4x4 or a lever?

Sounds like push button.

Remove the free wheeling hubs to be sure all wind up is gone and that they're not stuck. Whilst they are off try putting it in and out of 4wd Lo and back to 2wd High.

Has she used it in 4wd on the road?

sorry to all for no reply, busy sorting it.
to cut a long story shortish:
don't know how it got into 4wd, or who turnrd the man hubs on (but prob same people that smashed her door mirror)
found a connectoor loose on transfer which had stopped return to 2wd, now works ok.
appeared to have stuffed gearbox and by a stroke of luck found a r27 in a local breakers on a mint 05!!!!!
that got bunged in and now purring.
Local garage said 'a broke bearing dropped out when putting in replacement box'????
Where did that bearing come from?
Hence I now have a vvt gearbox which seems to go in and out of all the gears ok sitting on the bench, a sad bank balance and happy daughter. box may be ok, and I may now have a spare good one. A sorry tale, any ideas!
love from Whitby.

Further to this, did not think to check hubs on the rescue as I knew I'd left them on 2wd.
When I looked in daylight they were locked. Prob due to parking in someones personal parking space on the road o/s their house in Stockton, with door mirror smashed also.
Some people! Glad I live in the sticks!
