Hi,

When I put my AVM hubs on, I managed to break the end of a T15 Torx bit in one of the bolts, it is not in tight (they only go in to 4NM), but has resisted all atempts to get it out.  I am going to drill the centre of the Torx bit then just turn it anti-clockwise, it will come out, but I might damage the bolt and they don't seem to be available on their own.

Has anyone got a spare bolt they don't need?

I see I can buy a service kit that contains 12 bolts and the gaskets, so if it comes to it, I will buy one of those, then have some spares if anyone else needs one in the future.

Ta

That would be excellent if you do have a spare, I will only need one, no rush.

Isn't a Torx bit hardened steel? If it is you may need a tungsten carbide bit to drill your hole.

It is hardened steel and I have just purchased some tungsten carbide tipped drill bits to do the job, they were delivered this morning.

I suspect that the Torx bit will come out easily once drilled and a slight turn anti-clockwise as there is nothing holding it in other than the mating faces, then I should be able to get a new bit in and remove the bolt. If all goes well the bolt will come out with no damage and a replacement might not be required.

Thanks, good idea, I thought about using superglue, wasn't sure if it would work. It is just the broken Torx bit that needs to come out so that might work. I have plenty of small driver bits, so might try that first, with a bit of luck it will just pull the broken Torx bit out. If it doesn't work I can still drill it.

I did try a piece of rubber glued to the end of a bit and then press really hard, but it had a very small contact area and didn't get enough grip.

I shouldn't have said drill bit, I should have said "bur". A drill bit will have difficulty in starting on what is probably a jagged piece of hardened steel especially as it is only 4mm in dia. Are you sure it is only a T15 Torx bit?

It is definitely a T15, but it is not jagged, in fact rather smooth, so I stand a chance of superglue getting a firm hold, hopefully it will just pull the broken Torx bit out and then I can use a super hard hammer Torx bit I have bought.

I managed to shear it off in the first place as the recommended torque was right at the bottom end of my my torque wrench and I don't think it worked correctly. I have since bought another torque wrench to go down to 2NM.

The drill bits I have bought are made by Ruwag and feature a two step head, they have a small centre piece, then the main cutting head and can be used to self centre without punching first, see here

ruwag.co.uk/collections/metal-hss-drill-...riant=32729338347595

They are good value at under £2 for a small drill.

It's HSS not tungsten so I wouldn't hold my breath, but good luck anyway.

I know it doesn't say on the page, but I asked them if it was Tungsten Carbide tipped as I saw another page in the search which said they are. Apparently they are, it is just missed off the page for some reason.

I also bought a couple of Cobalt tipped drills, just in case.
