Slightly academic question as I still have to kill my Bridgestone ditchfinders but at what point do bigger tyres really start to need an additional transmission cooler? Knowing that the automatic is not rated for that much more torque than the 1.3 will provide and asking it to work harder means more heat the question is at what point is tyre size known to affect reliability? I like the idea of some lumpy bfg's but the minimum size is 215.75r15 which is 5% diameter increase plus the additional weight creating its own issues. I know that there's already the cooler to the side of the radiator so adding more isn't a big problem but is it necessary for such a modest increase, or is it paranoia?

I suspect it's more a matter of where you're driving (type of terrain) than just the size of the tires, faced with the same questions as you are (on a different vehicle), I started by installing a fluid temperature gauge (located on the transmission out line to the cooler) so I could see what the temperature increase was like, and concluded that I did not need any additional cooling - I rarely saw temperatures that were high enough to be of concern.

I would suggest a transmission temperature gauge on any automatic transmission vehicle that's going to be used off road (or for towing)

At the moment being standard I'm not too concerned as I am prepared to believe that Suzuki did enough r and d for me to safely use it within their design parameters. That said I am now inclined to put my obd2 display tool on it and see if transmission temperature is a monitored value if nothing else that's a baseline point of reference.

I think I would be more concerned of the strain on bearings and increase in torque on everything in the drive train if you go bigger. After I put on 235's and m16 I have changed the transmission, clutch, drive shaft, rear diff and rod end bearings, soon to change the steering box and king pins.
Some or most of it from my style of driving i must admit..

Your 215's should be ok if you otherwise just use it and not abuse it like me. :)

I would like to think that I am reasonably mechanically sympathetic to cars. After all Dreadnaught was still going strong at 112k miles with the factory wheel bearings and I only changed the clutch because the finger springs were getting weak. It's also an advantage for the automatic as it puts loads on everything more evenly and smoothly than the manual so things last better. That and whilst I do lots of off road none of it is particularly difficult and could be done in a car car.

The only other option would be some lumpy 205.70r15 but the range of new tyres in this size is virtually nonexistent or on back order forever.
