Surprised your Defender has a noisy low range. Personally not experienced that with the LT230 transfer box. Low should be as smooth and quiet as high (bar engine revs).
But yes, the Jimny does seem to have a bit of a whir about it in low range.

My query originated from the fact that my old LC was quiet in low range.

lt's alright at low speeds but get up to 20mph or more in fifth gear and there is a whine.
lt's not excessive but it is there. It's always done it, is fine in high range

I've owned my Jimny JB74 since I bought it new in December 2019. Up until recently I've only used 4L once, on my local beach whilst showing the car to 2 friends. Maybe because we were talking but I didn't think the transmission made much noise.
This week the dealer had the car to change the transfer box chain in order to cure that other noise. The rasp when pulling away sharply in low gear. The work done has greatly improved that problem.
As the car had been in the workshop I took it to the beach again to check out the 4WD system. 4H worked fine but the transmission whine in 4L was surprisingly loud.
I've been meaning to post a question about this myself, so I'm glad to see this thread. I wondered if I needed to visit the dealer again but it seems this noise is normal and I can live with that.
