Went out this morning to start the Jimny and the starter motor appears not to be engaging.
It's whirring over so I would assume it's the solenoid?
Any ideas for tapping the solenoid and can it be done from the top??
I can't even see it lol
I thought no problem I'll get it on the ramps but I can't do that if it's not running doh lol
I would assume the only real answer is a new starter??

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

Ok I've had a bit more time to ponder the problem and scan previous posts so it looks like a difficult job to do.
In the past I have taken off the inlet manifold or more accurately loosened it off to get access by pushing it aside. Would this be helpful to get at the starter??
I'm 74 now so find these "underneath" jobs a bit difficult so if anyone in the Kettering area could help with actually doing the job or recommending anyone local(bearing in mind I can't start it to get it anywhere) please let me know. I've no doubt it could be towed to start it if it needs to go somewhere local? Tea and a few quid supplied lol

You are right it's a pain to do a starter on your back. Unfortunately I don't know anyone that far south.

Its a from below job unless you take the inlet manifold off i'm afraid. Even then you cant see, need long arms and the bolts will be really tight.

You could always bump start it to get to a garage. The starter is only there to start it after all, so just be careful of stalling it on the journey :-)

I'm just getting prepared to get the starter out so,to that end, can anyone tell me the official part number or do these starters cover a few years??
Plenty on ebay but they seem to want a lot for a used one or should I go for a budget one and sell the car ? lol
It's 08 reg (yes the one with the dodgy gearbox)

I should explain I rarely use the car as my wife uses it. I have just noticed the padlock symbol is on??
Nothing has been touched and no keys changed. Does this mean the immobiliser is at fault?
Does the light go out once started and if it is the immobiliser why is the starter motor whirring over but not engaging??
Any previous cars I've had with immobiliser problems usually disable the starter completely.

Ok panic over it was the battery phew lol
Despite showing app 12.5v it was obviously not enough to turn the starter and throw in the solenoid.
I have a lithium jump pack so I thought I would just try it and the engine cranked over straight away and was charging at over 14v.
Although it's a Varta battery my wife does a lot of stop/start driving during the day and it's 3 yrs old so it must be on its last legs.
I've ordered a new one and told her to stop using the aircon lol .Heck of a lot easier than changing the starter.

Well that's a relief, easier and cheaper than a starter.
