Tow bars for 4th Gen?

Not sure if I asked this before or just looked at other threads.....

Who has a tow bar on their 4th Gen?

What bar do you have? Factory or aftermarket?

Really need to sort one out on mine as I'd like to tow a caravan. The factory detachable one looks ok, but a bit pricey and when I looked last out of stock everywhere.....

I don't want a dodgy aftermarket one that doesn't fit very well, but most/all of the aftermarket ones don't seem to have any photos of their bars fitted to a vehicle. So I'm skeptical on fitment.

Last month someone posted this on one of the FB groups.

Not sure how correct it is?

I've just rung my local suzuki for a price on fitting  a towbar.  They told me suzuki have suspended all towbar for all their suzuki vehicles.  So asked about roof bars. Not so keen as being on the short side may be bit challenging.  But they were £293. And I hadn't even got a roof box. I'm not rothchild.  I only wanted  to go camping x

I have the genuine one on mine and it's really good. The only strange thing is that there is no lock for the detachable hook so when not in use i always take it off.

The thing about not being able to get any genuine towbars for any Suzuki at the moment is correct. It's only a temporary issue though.

I have/had the OEM Suzuki towbar fitted. Seemed to work fine the two times I used it (once to tow a trailer, once to drag a wrecked car out of the road). Currently sat in the garage as it's a lot of weight to cart around and I've not needed to tow anything for a year or more. Left all the electrics in place, with the socket bagged up and cable tied inside the rear bumper. Fitted rear recovery points instead (they can't co-exist as they use the same mounting points), which are a lot lighter and less likely to act as a plow when offroad.

Don't think I'd want to leave the ball attached as it sticks out a looooong way, deffo a shin cracker.

I've got the genuine towbar with the detachable swan neck too.  The detachable bit lives in the Suzuki supplied bag in the house when not in use (I don't fancy it flying around inside the car in an accident)

Suzuki fitted it, and they have to throw the fuse box cover in the glove box as the live feed to the 13pin socket is on one of those jumper fuses, which didn't impress me, you think they'd have a wiring harness connector ready for it.

I had Suzuki fit it, as there is too much dodgy electronics liable to go wrong on these, and I didn't want to give Suzuki any way to wheedle out of fixing it by saying it was caused by me messing with the wiring

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

I have used towtrust bars on the last 4 cars I have needed to tow with and they are excellent quality and fit perfectly. I have a fixed one on Temeraire as I find the detached type a pain as I do a lot of towing. That said I think they only do a detached one for the 4. 150 quid ish with electrics so not massively expensive.

One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.

I have a UR towbar on my Gen3, it fitted perfectly and is very solid. It’s detachable and the bar is not coming out when in use. There is no lock, so I remove he swan neck bar when not in use and store it in a box in the boot well. The towbar site quite high, so doubt it reduces ground clearance much.

I have had factory fit, Towsure and Witter on previous vehicles, all have even equally as good.

If you want to be sure go for a Witter, if they make one for the Gen4.

I tow a small caravan and had some pain getting a tow bar fitted. The local tow bar specialist used the official harness to keep the warranty valid, however they used an after market detachable swan neck made by Brink. I wanted detachable as if you get a fixed one  and go off roading they become potato digger and they also smash your shins putting things in the back of the car.
Anyhows the Brink towbar very quickly became useless when I offered my caravan hitch to the ball. I could not get the height to engage my Alko anti sway device as the towbar was to short and under the spare tyre. The towbar dealer changed out the towbar for the official Suzuki one which clears the spare tyre and is perfect. The swan neck fits in the SZ5 rear box when not in use.
