The pick up being worked on will be a "standard sized" car and will have no chassis alterations at all.....

Those chassis that are shortend (my tray back) or lengthened (Terry's 90" pick up) do not need IVA. Thats not hear-say, it's from the ministry first hand. Terry told me that he had made exhastive enquiries with the ministry with regard to IVA on his first conversion and they were adament that M.O.T. test sufficiently ensured that the vehicle was safe to use.

I felt it prudent to ask the questions myself and also consult insurers. I received the same response from both parties.... is it all original drivetrain (yes) is the work to M.O.T. standard (yes). Has it passed an M.O.T. test (yes), then it is safe to use..... No further interest.

If you are considering buying a pick up or converting your own, don't see IVA as a problem, it isn't.... But please check for yourselves, there are no grey areas either, the car is either roadworthy or not and the M.O.T. tells you that....

Full disclosure to your insurers is by far the biggest issue.....

Very little actually changes with the car, they drive exactly the same.... (except the 90" that drives much nicer, more car like)

Flotation tyres look cool but they are awful to drive with and they must be used within their speed ratings which can be as low as 25mph....

Skinnies are the way to go for 99% of off road driving.......

hi guys
morning sniper you beat me to the reply to the above, i can confirm that what you have written is a true reflection of the lenthy conversatrions i had with DVLA and the IVA section regards the 90"chassis  pickup conversion i did.
with concerns over changes made to these jimny  pickups and tray backs, there is very little, to no interest from dvla at all, and it was made very clear that the owness was all about road safey,ie mot standars and insurance.
so i sudgest that its all down to how good the conversions are carried out, theres always going to be a difference in the interpretation of peoples work, which is subject in itselfs, but the main aim is for then all to be safe and converted to a high road saftey standard that can be mot tested and legal.

Here’s a few pictures of how we have progressed with this little job we’ve been on with, converted cab has just been bathed in blue tinted raptor coating to give it maximum protection. Have a look guys, this is the colour the customer wanted.
Im pretty sure it will have mixed views but I love the colour and think it will look a million dollars when completed.

Wow! Thanks Terry and Reece, thats absolutely fantastic, I'm so glad to see it in the flesh as it were, thats the colour I choose and thats the colour I got, I know thats going to be a bit marmite but I don't care what anyone says thats the dogs doodahs. I do have plans for silver for the roll cage and the tray back and wheels, and have some plans for a couple of small subtle colour details as the colour scheme is based on a sports suzuki motorcycle so it will be tempered a little, but I didn't want it to be a shrinking violet. Well done! Great job!

Hi guys
We just left the workshop, and can’t stop looking at it
looking forward to bolting some bits back on tomorow and that’s when the colour will be bought out in full.
To ansrew the question it’s had 4 Ltr of black to do the underneath and engine bay, inner wings , then 4 ltr of tintable for the top colour.
we shall be pumping  2 gal of wax oyl into the cavities tomorow as well so should last a fair few years now.

Hi Doc.

Is the use of Waxoyl your suggestion or the clients? and if its yours, what do you reckon are the benefits?

Cheers

Roger

hi roger
its part of the service we give on a job like this, but sure the customer not mind.
wax oyl ? its a product ive been using for the past 30 odd years on car repairs and give good long lasting protction, and give good results.
i restored a jaguar mk2 that we had to replace outer sill on back in late 80s that came back some 15yrs later for some repairs after a acident on the side, we was amased when we cut the sill off to do repairs, that it was just as clean as the day we fitted it.
we tend to stand the can in hot water for some time to make it flow better out the gun, its perfect for pumping into the cavaties and areas that cannot be acsesed with primer ect, it finds it own level then sets.
in my opinion theres nothing better.
hope this helps

Been cracking on with this for gazmo66 this week, nearly there now and here’s a few pics of what we been Upto.
hopefully it will be heading back to its owner over the wk end.
The next stage is the full tray back that’s being carried out by the owner, then I’m sure he will be out and about enjoying it.
more pictures of the finished project before it leaves.

Well guys that’s another one finished now, and going back to it’s owner tomorow.
We’re Very pleased with the outcome of the job and really like the colour too.
our job is done, and the customer is putting his touches to the rear cage and tray back himself.
so we’ve helped him out with some temporary rear lights and rear mud guards to enable a mot and get it mobile (only temp fitting).
have a look guys give us your thoughts, I’m sure gazmo66 will pick up this thread and update more pictures and info as the rear half conversion gets underway.
For now it’s onwards on upwards with the next project
take care guys
