Knocking noise in 1st & 2nd was created by Rjackson65324
So my Jimny has got a knocking / scratching (think wheel arch rub) noise pulling off in first and carrying on into 2nd, occasionally heard in 3rd.

The knocking intensifies with the RPM.

It only knocks like this going up but does not do it on deceleration, also it does it whilst driving forward and turning left, however if I were to pull away from a junction turning right the noise does not occur. I found this out going around a roundabout.

I’ve looked into a few things but it’s hard to diagnose when you’re actually in the car trying to pin point.

In a weird play around with it it seems if I lean slightly on the gear stick the noise dulls away, but i might be clutching at straws.

Does anyone have any advice at all?

Welcome to the forum. First question is what age is your Jimny and is it manual or automatic? If it is a 2005 to 2009 manual then it is likely that the gearbox will be needing a repair. If its outside that age range or an auto or your lucky it could be a number of different things like a broken cv joint or a collapsed wheel bearing.

Temeraire (2018 quasar grey automatic)
One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.

So it’s 2004 and it’s a manual, it’s just strange that it doesn’t do it when turning right

It does sound like a CV issue as Lambert says...

Lets see so if you're turning left slight incline at say 2000rpm
does it sort of sound like a machine gun when you add revs ?

If the answer is yes it's your rear engine mount that's on the rear of gearbox ;)

I thought I would reply as to close the loop, it turns out it was the rear engine / gearbox mount, it was deteriorated however one of the mounting bolts had sheered off and was also accounting for the rattling in 1st and 2nd
