Oil level question?

Hi all,

Just drained and filled my gearbox and transfer box...added the stated capacities of lovely fresh oil, but it didn't run out of the filler hole....??? so I am assuming...stick to the stated capacities and the filler plug/hole is not the "full" point, so won't necessarily run out after the correct capacity has been added? Cheers

Normally a gearbox or transfer box is filled until oil runs out of the filler hole.
But if you've added the correct quantity of oil, maybe the Jimny is different.
lf that's the case, it would certainly make refilling the gearbox less messy.

I have always filled to the level plugs on flat ground, reasoning that they put the fill point where it is because that is the correct capacity and I'd rather trust that than the questionable accuracy of my ability to measure a specific amount of oil laid on my back on my drive.

Always fill to the level plug, that's standard workshop practice. Chris

would like to ask, which oil do you use for each box
I definitely need to change mine, but a little lost when it comes to gear oil

If you look in the Jimny information section above there is a wiki with all that info.

Not changed my gbox or xfer box oil from new (2013) and when I looked at doing it gave up as I assume you need ramps or a lift to get at everything ?

After 7 years it will probably look like curry and it's ability to do it's job will be similar to curry.

If you cant do the job I would suggest you get someone who can.

Lack of basic maintenance will kill anything in time.

Roger
