I know that a car is a system and the parts interact and age together but it is annoying to fix one thing that causes a cascade failure. Gets expensive too.

Mis-timing was my problem.... I should have had the car in those trouble free years and not bought myself the resultant mess....
But owning it and all the joy & pain of that, has become as much a hobby, as using it.....

Daughters swift was in for the summer service changing gearbox, ac pump, driveshafts and drive joints, attaching the bumper back on the wing, re grinding the headlights and more. Spent about half the value of the car in parts.
So yes I was not sure I should have started..
Still not sure..
But no rust and it is a 4x4.

Many years ago I was asked to change the starter motor on a Renault 16. First instruction in the official manual.
REMOVE ENGINE.
I refused and did the job. Took me 7 hours.

The main problem is that there is not enough clearance to take the starter motor out easily. I was struggling with it every time, hence eventually I did grind at least 5-10mm off a bracket, which holds some other parts close by. It was just enough to let the motor fall out, but at least no more headache for me!

There's a Monty Python joke in there somewhere.
In my day we'd have been glad of a starter motor, we had to encourage t' hampster to get ont tweel an force it to run like buggery!
