This subject annoys me as a lot of manufacturers are changing service intervals to include an arbitrary time limit on service items such as cambelts.
My wife has an Audi Q3 Quattro with the 2 litre engine and 20,000 miles after 5 years but now we are told that the cam belt needs changing and whilst we are at it we should have the water pump replaced for good measure and it will only cost about £750!

Of course there was no mention of any of this in the service schedule we received when we bought the car. It's a fabulous car but the service dept. at the dealership are unscrupulous.

I'm not agreeing with their prices but a typical Audi will have something like 50 to 80 thousand miles on it at 5 years and the cambelt would be on my list of things to change. That yours is only at 20 thousand doesn't mean it hasn't been under tension and ageing in that time. The belt is still a rubber compound.

My bigger issue with modern vehicles is that they are designed to be worked on in specialist facilities with specialist tools, even the Jimny is not entirely exempt from this, and by specialist fitters, instead of being able to be maintained by a competent person with limited facilities and basic tools. I know a lot of it is done because of packaging and emissions and crash safety but as much or more is because of trying to tie the car ad therefore the paying customer into the dealer service model. This sticks in my throat.
