Jimnys ..what to look out for? was created by stephen1991
Hi everyone just joined & thought i would introduce myself! Will hopefully be looking for a jimny in the near future as a shoot vechile / light off roader & general handy second car to use. Is there anything major i should be looking out for on them? I imagine rust is a big issue on them ive seen them go on the boot floor and behind the rear seats & headlight areas. Any advice would be much appreciated cheers

All I have to say is
They all look good until you remove all the trim
Bumpers, arches, sill covers, internal boot plastics and front inner arch liners
Check all body to chassis mounts.

No one is going to let you remove the trims for a look.
So push your hands every where you can get them and press on the body panels.
If you discover wet mud it's probably never been washed out,so possibly rotten wear gloves just incase you push hole's in body work

Hi stephen1991, welcome along.
It's already been said above ^^^^^^^, but it's worth repeating, rust is the number 1 consideration on any Jimny. The places that go first are the front body / chassis mount which is hidden under the headlamps and front arch liners. See me101s post "Well, thats toast! Advice needed (again!) " pictures of this area. If you see rust around the headlamps and rust stains on the back of the plastic liner it's a sign of pending room. Next (but not far behind) is the boot jack storage area above the rear silencer, this luckily can be seen from within the car. Sills and rear body / chassis mounts are also rust areas, but you at least can see these.
Age is not always the issue, you can find good and bad in any age group, but obviously the older they get the potential for rust gets bigger.
Other things:- check everything works especially the 4x4 system can be engaged / disengaged.
I know all this sounds bad, but they are reliable and not all Jimnys are rusty, you just need to find a good one.
Good luck, this is G3 related.

Thanks for the info gents! I thought rust would be the main problem with them! I've driven them when abroad on holiday & they are fantastic little 4x4! In terms of modifications for off roading what would you reccomend? it's mainly for going across farmers fields & down dirt tracks to shooting grounds etc would a good set of tyres & a 2 inch lift kit be good enough?

As said by everyone else, no matter how good they look on the outside, check the books and crannies for rust, rust and more rust.

Got ours for a steal but it’s quite shocking to be honest, there was 1 body mount moulded out of silicone so we’re mid restoration now just waiting on more metal to turn up, but once we’ve turned it to a solid base the mods shall start.

So to cut a long story short, check it deeply and if it needs work make sure you’re willing to do it or pay for it to be done but most of all enjoy it once you take the plunge.

How long would you say a Jimny will last before serious corrosion can set in?
With Defenders it’s about fifteen years if they are just driven and not looked after.
Obviously if you treated the chassis every year they last decades, but few did.

It depends what you call serious corrosion. If we say requires welding to fix then it's possible to achieve perforation in the front body mounts I believe at about 8 to 10 years. Obviously they will have been rusting away before this, I am talking about a hole in the metal.
This is a known rot spot on the Gen3 and its not a given this will happen.
My own Jimny had a hole in the passenger side at 9 years old, the driver's side was not perforated but was showing signs of rust.
My car was as supplied by Suzuki (no additional rust protection) and was a looked after example with low milage road use only. Obviously previous owner use could extend or shorten my estimation. Chassis tend to last a lot longer than the body.
The G4 may not suffer from the same rot spots, but surface rust on photos I have seen suggests it's worth getting it waxed if you intend to keep it.

If you're buying new or new ish I can't recommend applying any kind of secondary rust prevention product highly enough. There are increasing reports of Jimny the same age as my Dreadnaught having problems with mot's for corrosion. I have applied waxoyl to mine every year before they start salting the roads and whilst it's labour intensive I have a solid Jimny for my efforts.

When I bought my Jimny it was 3 years old and the underside was really rusty but no holes yet. It was much more rusty than my 12yr old Lexus or my 24yr old Puch G. So I think that underside and cavity rust protection is extremely important!
