Manual hubs fitted (at last!) but got issues.

Finally got round to fitting the manual hubs, there was no rush as car not going anywhere! However, taken it down the road to the tip, and have a lot of noise coming from the rear. Have I done damage when I drove it home with 4wd engaged? Seems to drive OK apart from the noise.
Done a quick novice 'how to' for anyone that needs some help.

Nice one
Couple of things I did didn't use sealant and applied waterproof grease over the heads on the small screw's
This helps getting them out next time

Not a bad idea on the grease! I only used the sealant as I thought I had read it somewhere - have been known to be wrong before though!!

If you had the transfer box in 4x4 and the hubs engaged at the same time you could have hurt something but if you only had one or the other engaged you could be looking for a coincidence failure as having either the transfer or hubs disconnected is ok.

Lambert, unfortunately I drove 114 miles in 4wd when it got stuck. I had the old vac hubs at the time. Just wondering if it is the rear diff that has gone. All was fine before.

Did both the old vacuum hubs lock in together at the same time when it failed or just 1 of them?

That's unfortunate. Sounds like something has been hurt. Time to get it off the floor on 4 axle stands and carefully listen for noises from the rotating parts front and back. Using either a proper engineering stethoscope or a long screwdriver to the ear can help to identify noises to specific components. Good luck.

Had it on stands when I was messing about fixing the 4wd. When I had it in gear, it all sounded rough. I had convinced myself it was just because it was running on the metal stands, obviously not. If they have gone kaput, would fitting a locking diff solve it, or is it new axle time?

The diffs themselves are quite tough especially in the rear. It's more likely that the noise is travelling from the transfer box. It's worth disconnecting the prop shafts individually and listening to the components in as much of an isolated condition as possible. Chasing noises is a pain and needs to be done fairly meticulously.
