It's normally all the mud from the lanes getting baked onto the exhaust. It's normal for it to feel warm under the bonnet- there is an engine in there!

Mine tends to smell warm when I have had one of the big for it trailers up some of the hills round here but as Busta says it's got an engine under the bonnet and it's having to work quite hard.

Check that there is no oil dripping to catalysator. even very small amounts will smell like you mentioned. For some reason my car does this if it is parked not straight for a weekend. Seems that some drops of gear oil finds it's way to exhaust. The leak is very small, i check the level every year but does not need refilling. Some links on top of the gearbox are quite oily. Anyone know exact place where it is leaking?
